Troy Apke has speed to burn, and now might have the best chance of his young pro career to show it on the field. The third-year former Penn State safety is penciled in as the top free safety on the depth chart the Washington Football Team released over the weekend. He is listed alongside strong safety Landon Collins and cornerbacks Kendall Fuller and Ronald Darby in a new-look Washington secondary.

Apke appeared in 15 games last season and made two starts on his way to finishing with 15 tackles, one interception and two passes defended. His role expanded from his rookie season in 2018, when he appeared in two games and was placed on injured reserved Oct. 29.

Apke made his first career start in a Week 8 loss to Minnesota last season, which came after arguably the best performance of his career with six tackles and his first career interception in a 9-0 loss to San Francisco. Apke also record six tackles in a Week 9 start at Buffalo.

Washington selected Apke in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft after he turned heads at the NFL Combine with a time of 4.35 seconds in the 40-yard dash. That number helped solidify what Washington saw on film from Apke at Penn State, where he finished his senior season with 55 tackles, five pass breakups and an interception.

Washington will be led by first-year coach Ron Rivera in the midst of a major overhaul in the team’s name and branding. It will go by Washington Football Team in its first season after cutting ties with its controversial Redskins name.

Washington will also be guided by a new defensive coordinator in Jack Del Rio and a new offensive coordinator in Scott Turner.
