THIS week should have seen the opening of the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo.
But instead, five times gold medal-winning para-athlete Hannah Cockroft has been at home.
“I was gutted when the Paralympics were called off, because I knew I was ready and in shape,” says Hannah, 28.
“As a Paralympian, it’s the one year you get noticed, so it’s been hard.”
I’ve met Hannah, an MBE, a few times and I know she’s a thrifty moneysaver like me, so I asked her for her top tips.
Here’s how she keeps her spending on track . . .
GO LOCAL: “My spending habits really changed during lockdown.
“Your Olympic costs are covered, but everything else we fund ourselves.
“Normally I’m training all the time, and that means I’m never at home, which means I spend loads on food and eating out.
“Now I’ve been using local greengrocers, where you get lots of fruit and veg for your money, and the local butcher, which has also saved me cash.”
TRIM THE TREATS: Hannah says: “Instead of splashing out on treats to get through a long, hard week of training, my treat is now cooking a nice meal.
“Usually I’m tired and just want something quick after training. Now I have time to cook and I love a Sunday roast.”
SECOND-HAND SAVINGS: “I couldn’t go to the gym or hit the track, so had to create a gym at home. Everything I bought has been from eBay or secondhand.
“I’m the kind of person to trawl Facebook Marketplace every night.”
BUY NOW, SAVE LATER: “With all the online sales, I’ve been buying Christmas presents with the cash I saved during lockdown. It really helps to buy them now as I struggle with my budget in autumn.
“This year, I’ve got some really good deals on presents, so my family will get better gifts and I’ve spent less.”
Hannah is an ambassador for Müller Yoghurts, sponsors of British Athletics.
Müller Corner Skyr yoghurts, £1.20 each, are currently four for £3 at Tesco.
