So here are some handy ways to cash in your coins.

FINDER’S FEE: Change can be hiding anywhere. After you have emptied your purse or pockets and checked down the back of the sofa, look underneath it too. Laundry baskets and coat pockets are also top spots for forgotten pennies. Next stop . . . the car.

Check under and between the seats, as well as in the cup holders. If you have more than one handbag, rummage through them all to see what you can unearth.

BANK IT: Once you have collected your coins, visit the bank (wearing your facemask) to deposit it directly into your bank account. It all adds up.

DROP IT: Keep a piggy bank or money dish somewhere easy to reach and where you will see it, so you remember to drop in any loose change. Soon enough, you will have trained yourself into the money-saving habit.

Even after things go back to normal, just £5 in loose change every week adds up to £260 by the end of the year.

To keep change in a safe place, and ease the temptation to spend it, get a piggy bank on Amazon (around £4.50).

DIGITAL PIGGY: Research shows one in five Londoners throws change in the bin! That’s a rubbish idea. Pop those pennies in the piggy bank or, if you typically pay by debit card, open a digital bank account that rounds up your payments. I like Monzo.

As a bonus, when you refer a friend and they start spending, you both get £5 each.

I also rate the Moneybox app. Similar to Monzo, it rounds up your purchases to the nearest pound and puts the change into a savings fund for you. Couldn’t be easier.

Innovation districts like Melbourne's could help chart our course out of crisis

In the face of the global health and climate crises, we look at our cities both anxiously and hopefully. We deviate from our normal patterns of behaviour to avoid close physical contact and suffer associated emotional and practical losses.
